Introduction; There are two basic ways you can become a member of a family. You are either born into that family or adopted into it.

The bible tells of the new Birth as the way to become a member of the family of God - a child of God Jn. 3:5, Jn 1:12. The New Birth is a spiritual experience that transforms you from being a child of the devil into a child of God. It is both a spiritual and moral change. By this experience, Christ Jesus comes to live in your heart by the Holy Spirit. You then begin your heavenward journey. No one can enter heaven without being born again. It is a vital experience for all. Jn 3:3-7.

1. There Are Certain Things That Should Not Be Confused With The New Birth

(a) Being religious – Acts 10:1-8

Cornelius was a very religious man: he was devout, gave alms, prayed, saw visions etc. Yet he needed to be born again.

(b) Keeping the Law – Jam. 2:10; Rom. 3:20

No human being can successfully keep all the laws.  Offending in one means offending in all.

(c) Believing there is God – Jam. 2:19

Our lives must reflect our faith in a holy God.  Just accepting there is God is insufficient for the devil too would do that much.

(d) Knowing the Bible – Matt. 4:6

It is not profitable for us if the Scriptures we know do not affect our lives unto Godliness.  The devil too knows the Bible.

(e) Being self-righteous – Isa 64:6

It is not our righteousness that can get us to heaven but that of Jesus Christ.  When we think we are best, God sees as a filthy rag except we take on the righteousness of Christ.

All these things that look like the new birth are good in themselves but grossly inadequate to save us.  You can think of other similar things that look like the new birth but are not.

2.   What Is The New Birth?

(a) A change in one’s life effected by the word of God – I Peter. 1:23

(b) Deliverance from the power of darkness and translation into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. – Col:1:13

(c) Obtaining redemption and forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus – Col. 1:14

(d) Receiving power to become the son of God by faith – Jn.1:12

(e) Being saved by grace through faith – Eph. 2:8-10

The new birth is the experience of transformation in one’s nature that comes through genuine repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

3.   Why Is The New Birth So Important?

(a) Without the new birth it is not possible for ANYONE to see the Kingdom of God talk less of entering into it – Jn. 3:3

(b) ALL (without exception) have sinned and the sure end of every sinner is eternal death.  It is through the new birth alone we can escape hell – Rom. 3:23; 6:23

(c) Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to God the Father – Jn. 14:6

It is therefore IMPOSSIIBLE to make heaven without being born again.

4.  How Can We Experience The New Birth?

Taking these four basic steps sincerely gets a person born again:

(a) Acknowledge that you are a sinner – Rom.3:23

(b) Confess your sins to God and sincerely turn away from the sins. Forsake all of them – Prov. 28:13; Isa. 55: 6- 7

(c) Receive Christ by faith into your heart – Jn. 1:12; Rom. 10:9 – 13

(d) Rejoice and give thanks to God for saving you – Acts. 8:35 – 37

5. What Are The Evidence Of The New Birth?

(a) Changed nature – 2 Cor. 5:17

(b) No more condemnation – Rom. 8:1-2

(c) Hope of eternal life – Jn. 3:16-18

(d) Peace with God – Rom. 5:1-2

The testimony of the word of God supersedes your feelings.  Now, are you sure you are born again?.

6.  How Can We Live The New Life Successfully?

(a) Continuing in the word of God – Jn. 8:31

(b) Praying regularly – I Thes. 5:17

(c) Yielding the body to holy living by shunning all worldliness through a renewed mind – Rom. 12:1-2

(d) Constantly fellowshipping with other believers – Heb. 10:25

Conclusion: If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you are born again.  Move on in this experience by constant fellowship with God in prayer and Bible study and walk also with other believers.  You will grow and become mature.
